In Exodus 29-30 we read about a special blend of holy oil that had to be made. This oil was used to anoint Aaron, his sons, the tabernacle, the equipment and the altar.
Prophet Samuel anointed Saul and later David as king of Israel - 1 Samuel 10:1, 16:3,12-13. A horn was filled with oil and then poured over the head of the new king - Exodus 29:7. The Spirit of the Lord left Saul and came over David once he was anointed. Later other kings were anointed in the same way. Anointing was more than just pouring of oil; God’s Spirit came over the person when he was anointed.
Even though Cyrus didn’t know God, God anointed him. Cyrus was used to help God’s people return to Israel and build the temple.

For I will open doors before him and no fortified gate will remain closed. [2] “ ‘I will march out in front of you and level every obstacle. I will shatter to pieces bronze doors and slice through iron bars. [3] I will give you hidden treasures of darkness and wealth waiting in secret sites so that you recognize me, for it is I, YAHWEH, the God of Israel, who calls you by your name! [4] For the sake of my servant Jacob, and Israel my chosen, I call you by your name and give you a title of honor. But you don’t even know me. [5] I am YAHWEH, the only God there is, and you’ll never find another. I will strengthen you for victory, even though you do not intimately know who I am.
Daniel prophesied that Jesus, the anointed one, would come.

Then John bore witness, saying, "I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on Him. [33] I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, 'The One on whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' [34] I have seen and have borne witness that He is the Son of God."

Anointing always comes from God. We still need the anointing of the Holy Spirit for our calling. In the Old Testament the oil was used as a symbol of God’s presence and prophets and priests would anoint people with oil. The physical oil in the temple was necessary to keep the lamps burning - Exodus 27:20-21. Anointing changed from a physical to a more spiritual event. John the Baptist baptised Jesus, but God sent a dove and the anointing. The 120 were praying when they got anointed with the Holy Spirit. They spoke in strange languages and signs and wonders followed. Today Holy Spirit is a sign of God’s presence. An intimate relationship with the Father will lead to your anointing. Our fruit shows whether we walk with Holy Spirit or not. It’s important that our spiritual oil never runs out.
1 John 2:20 TPT
But the Holy One has anointed you and you all know the truth.
1 John 2:27 MEV
But the anointing which you have received from Him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. For as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and just as it has taught you, remain in Him.
